Jimmy Fallon found himself on the other side of the interview when filmmaker Josh Safdie stopped by NBC’s The Tonight Show Thursday night.
Safdie’s visit came some two weeks after his Marty Supreme garnered nine Academy Award nominations—including for Best Picture, Directing, and Original Screenplay (which he co-wrote with Ronald Bronstein).
Marty Supreme headliner Timothée Chalamet had already guested on The Tonight Show in mid-December, as awards season was just getting underway.
As Fallon and Safdie chopped it up—Fallon just last week moderated a NYC Q&A between Marty Supreme‘s director and star—Safdie gradually turned the table by asking the Tonight Show host about his role in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, as band manager Dennis Hope. As the conversation steered into that turn, and Safdie peppered Fallon with Qs about developing his ’70s look, the Tonight Show host eventually ceded his chair and traded places with Safdie.
Safdie proceeded to ask Fallon about filming Almost Famous‘ climactic private jet scene—no spoilers!—and whether a real plane was used. (Answer: no.) He then fully channeled a late-night host by saying to Fallon, “Again, I don’t want to ruin it, but we do have a clip…” And sure ’nuff, the PJ scene was at the ready.
Watch the switcheroo, cued up above.
After the clip played, Fallon and Safdie returned to their proper posts—the bit was clearly pre-planned—to further discuss Marty Supreme‘s success, followed by, yes, a clip of the Oscars contender.
Reminder: The Tonight Show will serve up a special Friday outing this week, leading out of NBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony for the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. His guests will be Chris Hemsworth (whose Crime 101 thriller hits theaters next week) and YouTuber MrBeast, with a musical performance by Lil Uzi Vert.
