Everyone has that coworker: the one you pass in the hallway and exchange polite nods with—you really should know their name, but you don’t. On Wednesday night’s episode of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon gave that universal workplace anxiety the full-blown music video treatment, with an assist from Kevin James as Fallon’s mysterious colleague.
Shot in and around The Tonight Show’s 30 Rock offices, the pre-taped segment plays out like a mini rom-com—if the romance were between two people who can’t remember each other’s names. Backed into a corner, James settles for the ultimate (and humiliating) placeholder: “’Sup, bro?”
The song’s chorus imagines an alternate universe in which they bond over “endless mimosas” and become best friends… if only they knew each other’s names. Naturally, the payoff comes in the final seconds, when Fallon finally learns James’ name—only to discover it’s his last day.
From classroom instruments to viral song parodies, Fallon has long leaned into musical comedy as his late-night superpower. With “The Coworker Whom I Barely Know,” he adds another relatable anthem to his catalog—one that might have viewers everywhere nervously reconsidering that workplace acquaintance they’ve been waving at for years.
