SNL’s Jeremy Culhane Channels TRL-Era Carson Daly in New Dropout Series MP3

Saturday Night Live featured player Jeremy Culhane is heading back to Dropout—this time as the host of a satirical music video countdown show.

Culhane will star in MP3, a new scripted comedy that puts him in the Carson Daly-like role at the center of a Total Request Live-style series. The three-episode show premieres Nov. 4 on Dropout.

Culhane plays Dane Cartel, one of three hosts of the show-within-a-show, alongside Skye Townsend and Aparna Nancherla. Together, they’ll introduce original music videos, interview guests, and spar with the program’s producer, Thomas Cartel (Culhane’s character’s father), played by Paul F. Tompkins.

Each episode will feature three new comedy music videos performed by Dropout regulars, including Jimmy Kimmel Live! announcer Lou Wilson, Lily Du, and Katie Marovitch. Zach Reino and Jess McKenna wrote the series and composed its songs, which will be released to music streaming platforms after they appear on the show.

The series brings Culhane back to Dropout as he continues his second season at SNL. Culhane joined the NBC sketch show as a featured player last fall after establishing himself in the online comedy world, including appearances on Dropout.

MP3 also marks something of a return for Dropout itself. It is the streamer’s first new original scripted live-action series in seven years, following a stretch in which the former CollegeHumor focused largely on unscripted shows such as Game Changer and Dimension 20, along with a handful of animated projects.

New episodes of MP3 will arrive every two weeks, with the season finale set for Dec. 2.

And yes, the show-within-the-show’s title has been reverse-engineered around the file format: “MP3” stands for the considerably more awkward “Music Presentation 3.”
