Colin Jost Tapped to Host Pop Culture Jeopardy! for Prime Video

Colin Jost is riding the Jeopardy! wave.

The Saturday Night Live star is slated to host Prime Video’s Pop Culture Jeopardy!, a spinoff of the popular quiz show. “What is: I’m excited,” Jost, who’s currently covering the Olympic surfing competition in Tahiti (and racking up an almost comical number of injuries), said of the news.

Pop Culture Jeopardy!, which hails from Sony Television, was first announced in May at Prime Video’s upfront presentation. Per a press release, the series is a “brand-new twist on the classic quiz show’s ‘answer-and-question’ format that combines the academic rigor of Jeopardy! with the excitement and unpredictability of pop culture.”

Contestants will play in teams of three and battle it out tournament-style for a grand prize. Viewers can expect categories to cover a wide range of topics, spanning from “Alternative Rock to The Avengers; Broadway to MMA; Gen Z to Zendaya.”

“Colin’s sharp wit and intelligence epitomize Pop Culture Jeopardy!,” Suzanne Prete, president of Game Shows at Sony Television, said in a statement obtained by Deadline. “He’s smart and quick, like our contestants, and we know he’ll be able to keep up with them while making this new series his own. We could not be happier that he is joining us for this new journey.”

Lauren Anderson, head of brand and content innovation at Amazon MGM Studios, added that Jost’s “wry affability and pop culture fluency make him uniquely qualified as the perfect host for this new iteration of the beloved franchise.”

The “Weekend Update” co-anchor was previously a clue on Jeopardy! twice, but the contestants didn’t know who he was either time. “I found out about it because my mom sent me the clip and she said ‘I would have gotten it,’” he explained. “When you’re a clue on Jeopardy!, you feel like you’ve made it. But then in the same moment you realize, ‘Oh, I have not.’”

Pop Culture Jeopardy! marks the first time the Jeopardy! franchise has expanded into the streaming world. Emmy-winning producer and writer Michael Davies, who’s also the showrunner of Jeopardy!, will serve as executive producer.

There’s no word yet on an official release date—but perhaps the show’s first category can be about Jost’s grisly toe injuries?
