A longtime Late Show with Stephen Colbert staffer is set to make his feature film directorial debut.
Producer and segment director Ballard C. Boyd is in post-production on the indie mystery-comedy-thriller Jackrabbit. Deadline was first to report the news.
Boyd also penned the script for Jackrabbit, which follows two new roommates in New York who, despite their own conflicts, team up to investigate the disappearance of their mutual friend. Taylor Ortega and Kuhoo Verma star as the two roommates, with Soojeong Son playing their friend who goes missing.
Photography on the feature wrapped in May, Boyd shared on Instagram. “The performances in this film are so so good and the scope of it for an indie is huge,” he wrote at the time.
Boyd has been with The Late Show since 2015, working as a digital producer, and later as a field producer and segment director. He continues to serve as a producer and segment director for the show. His work for the show includes behind-the-scenes mockumentary series Backstage Pass, “A Very Goldblum Christmas,” and “Conservative Coffee Brand.”
He also worked on Colbert’s Showtime election night specials in 2016 and 2020, recieving an Emmy Award for the latter. In 2024, Boyd wrote and directed the short film Night Session starring Richard Kind.
Boyd is also producing the project, which he describes as “part ‘odd couple’ comedy and part suspenseful mystery thriller.”
“I’m excited to be making a film about how we’re more alike than different, and that we’re stronger together, especially in the times we’re living in,” Boyd told Deadline.
