It seems Studio 8H really was the petri dish Colin Jost joked about at Sunday’s SNL anniversary special, with Laraine Newman joining the growing list of attendees to find herself under the weather.
The founding Not Ready for Primetime Player posted a photo Friday morning of flu medication and an inhaler to Instagram, captioning the post simply “SNL50.” She clarified to a commenter that she had the flu.
Yesterday, Steve Martin announced that he and fellow SNL50 attendee Martin Short would have to reschedule two performances they had scheduled for this weekend, citing Short coming down with COVID.
Martin’s announcement came with an accompanying photo of Short kissing Maya Rudolph at the Sunday night anniversary special, writing “Maya had covid. Marty has Covid. I wonder why?”
“The SNL 50th Covid curse is real,” Martin added.
Indeed, Colin Jost delivered a prescient joke during SNL50‘s “Weekend Update” segment about the potential for the special to become a superspreader.
“Health experts are facing increased pressure this winter in the face of outbreaks of COVID, the flu, RSV, and norovirus, which they’re calling a ‘quad-demic,’” Jost said. “So we did the smart thing and packed every beloved entertainer over 60 into one tiny space.”
Ironically, former SNL cast member and frequent Season 50 guest star Dana Carvey was forced to miss the big anniversary show due to his own flu diagnosis. “I had lingering effects from the flu, so I was told not to travel,” Carvey explained on today’s episode of his Superfly podcast.
While there haven’t yet been other publicly confirmed COVID cases spawned from SNL50, Newman’s flu diagnosis seems to prove that Jost’s “quad-demic” joke was more accurate than anyone hoped.
So sorry for all the cast members who sacrificed their health for all of us who have admired them since they began so long ago. They are my best memories of TV and entertainment since SNL began. Please take care of yourselves and get well very soon ! The 50th is unsurpassed with great unforgotten memories! Thanks!!!
Geez. I didn’t see a single mask either. Ah, ego trumps everything, eh?
A neighbor scrupulously careful and vaccinated RN (ret) & her husband just got first time COVID. Her son was one of the very first patients at the very start. His long covid ruined his life.
This crap isn’t over and everyone is too complacent.
I’m still masking up anywhere indoors. There’s a lot of junk still out there, including the common cold ferried around by those tiny little virus vectors: kids.
The HMO refused me the RSV vaccination because it’s restricted to over 75yo which is BS; it’s the $. Pretty soon with that Kennedy goon at HHS, we may all lose access to vaccinations.
The hubris of thinking one is irreplaceable at work or social events is not exclusive to any party, locale or age group.
Sick? STAY THE F HOME!
there’s always been the Flu. before Covid, the flu killed about 50,000 people a year.not nearly Covid numbers, but still…no masks all those years. I’m sorry, but I snicker when I see people still wearing masks, especially those who wear them in their car while driving, alone. I’m sure I’ll be hated for this comment, but oh well. I won’t live my life in fear of getting sick.
I am 66 and got the RSV shot and my insurance took it. Maybe it is just your type of insurance. I just stay aware of what’s out there that can make you sick which is bad when you get older and already have health issues. I do not go around wearing a mask anymore but I always have a bag of wipes with me and in hand when I go into any store and I never go when it is crowded. You will not see me in any crowed place.
According to The View, Whoopi Goldberg has the flu, too. I hope everyone who was there and is now ill gets well soon.
Being Healthy is Important!!
