88 Year-Old Morgan Freeman Wants to Host SNL

He’s played presidents, convicts, detectives, and even God—but Morgan Freeman has never played a Saturday Night Live host.

In a new interview with USA Today, the Oscar-winning actor implied that he’s never been asked to take the SNL stage, but made it clear that an invitation would be more than welcome. Speaking alongside Woody Harrelson, his co-star in the new movie sequel Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, Freeman said, “I wouldn’t mind hosting it at all… As a matter of fact, it would be a feather in the ol’ cap, you know?”

Freeman quickly added that he’s not holding his breath for the call. But fans might feel differently. Freeman’s mix of gravitas, dry humor, and pop-culture ubiquity make him a natural fit for the show’s brand of comedy—and history suggests age alone wouldn’t stand in the way.

After all, SNL has pulled off this feat before. In 2010, following a viral fan campaign, then-88-year-old Betty White became one of the oldest hosts in the show’s history. Not only did she manage the famously grueling production week, she thrived in it, appearing in multiple sketches and earning rave reviews from both viewers and critics.

Freeman also has at least one high-profile cheerleader. Harrelson—a member of SNL’s Five-Timers Club—told USA Today, “I’d love it if he hosted.” With that kind of endorsement, perhaps the feather for Freeman’s cap isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds.
