SNL Screen Time Report: Dakota Johnson and Turnstile (S52 E2)

It was a milestone-filled night this week at Saturday Night Live, starting with host Dakota Johnson celebrating her birthday with a surprise cameo from friend Taylor Swift.

Sarah Sherman had something to celebrate, too, as she marked her 100th episode with one of the biggest screen-time totals of her six-season career. And at 19:55, “Weekend Update” was the show’s longest edition in at least a decade.

Elsewhere, one cast member rebounded from a surprisingly quiet premiere, while SNL’s two newest featured players are still waiting for their breakout moments.

Here’s how the numbers shook out for each of this week’s named performers:

Note: Our screen time calculation method prioritizes face time, meaning that any contiguous (off-screen but in-scene) moments and most partial body appearances do not count. Screen time in the opening credits, bumpers, goodnights, and cut-for-time sketches are not included, nor do those portions factor into our assessment of the episode’s total running time.

Inside the Numbers

Dakota Johnson Keeps It Short
Johnson logged 17:49 in her third turn as host, making her the first SNL host to finish below 20 minutes since first-timer Teyana Taylor clocked 15:28 in January. Johnson’s total also fell below the 19:23 she recorded when she last hosted the show.

Sarah Sherman Makes No. 100 Count
Sherman celebrated her 100th SNL episode with 8:50 of screen time, the seventh-highest total of her six-season career. Nearly half of that came at the “Weekend Update” desk, where she made her 23rd appearance as an “Update” guest, this time as matchmaker Debbie Mush (4:04).

Now the longest-tenured woman in the current cast, Sherman is the 17th woman in SNL history to reach six seasons. She’s also closing in on another milestone: Sherman is now 4:03 away from reaching seven and a half hours of career screen time.

‘Weekend Update’ Pushes 20 Minutes
Clocking in at 19:55, “Weekend Update” accounted for nearly a third of Saturday’s episode and was the longest edition in at least 10 seasons. It topped the previous high over that span by more than two minutes: the 17:45 “Update” from Walton Goggins’ Season 50 episode.

The supersized segment, which saw Michael Che welcome two “Update” guests from his side of the desk—Kam Patterson and Sherman’s Debbie Mush—helped Che lead the cast in screen time, finishing more than two minutes ahead of his co-anchor Colin Jost.

Jost had a busy night himself, reprising his Pete Hegseth impression during the cold open for the 12th time in the last 24 episodes. He topped eight minutes of screen time for just the third time in eight years.

No Rookie Breakout—Yet
Two episodes into their freshman seasons, Grace Reiter and Saidah Belo-Osagie are each still waiting for their first big showcase. Both popped up in the “Mean, Scary Girlfriend” pretape and “Get Ready with Me,” which featured every woman in the cast except Ashley Padilla, but the two newcomers again finished at the bottom of the cast in screen time.

That could change quickly. Veronika Slowikowska broke through with nearly seven and a half minutes in her third episode last season, hosted by Sabrina Carpenter. And “Weekend Update” has become a frequent early proving ground for rookies: in recent years, Tommy Brennan, Kam Patterson, Jane Wickline, Devon Walker, Marcello Hernández, and Michael Longfellow all made their first appearances at the desk within their first three episodes.

Marcello Hernández completes the “SNL Cycle”
After logging just 41 seconds in last week’s Jalen Brunson-hosted premiere—the lowest total of any repertory player—Hernández came roaring back in Week 2, pulling off what we like to call the “SNL Cycle” by appearing in all four major components of the show: the cold open (1:18), a live sketch (1:30), a pretape (0:35), and “Weekend Update” (5:06).

Hernández has now topped eight minutes of screen time 10 times in 80 episodes as a cast member. His next sketch will mark another milestone: his 250th individual appearance on SNL.

Tommy Brennan is still waiting to go live
Brennan has appeared in both episodes this season, but the second-year featured player has yet to make it onto the Studio 8H stage. His only screen time has come in pretapes: 1:21 in “North High” with Brunson last week and 34 seconds in “Mean, Scary Girlfriend” this week.

It’s a sharp contrast with the start of Brennan’s rookie season, when he averaged 3:47 through his first six episodes, a stretch that included an “Update” appearance and a “Karaoke Night” pairing with Nikki Glaser.

Through two episodes this season, Brennan is averaging just 58 seconds per episode, compared with 4:50 for his fellow Season 51 hires Jeremy Culhane, Ben Marshall, Patterson, and Slowikowska.
