Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance during Dakota Johnson’s Saturday Night Live monologue tonight, playing herself: a close friend of Johnson’s who has heard way too much.
Johnson, hosting SNL for the third time on the eve of her birthday, spent much of her monologue joking about her dating history.
“What else has happened since last time I hosted?” she asked. “Well, I went through two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians. Looking for a third.”
After briefly insisting she wasn’t going to discuss her personal life, Johnson almost immediately went back to discussing her personal life.
“The movie is a psychosexual erotic thriller,” she said of her new film Verity. “And you know what? So is dating musicians.”
Johnson joked that while some people leave concerts with merchandise, “I leave concerts with a two-and-a-half-year relationship.”
“But I have really good friends,” she added. “They don’t judge me for dating these men. They’re actually really supportive.”
Cue Swift.
“Ladies and gentlemen, my literal therapist,” Johnson said as Swift joined her.
“I’m not—I’m not your therapist, actually,” Swift corrected her. “You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some.”
“Yeah, well, I have manners,” Johnson replied.
Swift continued: “And then you flop on my couch and overshare, and every so often I just say, ‘Damn, that’s crazy.’”
“Is that not a therapist?” Johnson asked.
According to Swift, the visits typically end with her telling Johnson it’s getting late and she should probably leave—only for Johnson to declare, “Sleepover, yay!”
“And then I give you a Pedialyte, and my security drives you home,” Swift said.
The cameo comes at the end of an unusually public stretch for the longtime friends.
Johnson was among the guests at Swift and Travis Kelce’s July 3 wedding at Madison Square Garden. Then, just six days before SNL, Johnson presented Swift with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award at the VMAs.
That night also saw the premiere of “Patient Zero,” the dark Gothic music video written and directed by Swift and co-starring Johnson and Colin Farrell. Johnson and Farrell play a married couple, with Farrell’s character becoming the dangerous romantic link between Johnson and Swift.
Speaking to BBC Radio 1’s Greg James the day after the VMAs, Johnson called Swift a “genius person” and said the two talk about “everything.” Asked about the Swift-Kelce wedding, Johnson called it “so fun” and said it “felt so completely her.”
Their friendship dates back roughly a decade. Swift co-wrote and recorded “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” with Zayn for Johnson’s 2017 film Fifty Shades Darker, and the two were spotted together socially years before they began talking about each other quite so publicly.
Swift also figured into Johnson’s previous SNL monologue in January 2024, when Johnson showed a photo from the show’s 40th anniversary special. Donald Trump could be seen sitting behind her as Johnson marveled that she had once been so close to someone who would become “the most powerful person in America.”
The camera then zoomed in on Swift.
This time, Swift got to deliver her own punchlines—and, after Johnson wrapped the monologue, one last reminder to the audience: “It’s her birthday.”
