Matt Damon wasted no time renewing his feud with Jimmy Kimmel in Brooklyn.
On the first night of Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s weeklong return to the Brooklyn Academy of Music Monday, Damon popped up unannounced during Kimmel’s monologue—this time posing as a Red Sox fan in the audience.
The setup came as Kimmel noted that the Yankees and Red Sox were set to meet in the postseason. When he asked whether there were any Sox fans in the house, Damon’s voice came booming from the crowd.
“Go Sox!” he yelled.
Kimmel quickly zeroed in on him. “You, the loser in the Red Sox cap, what is your name?”
“You know my name,” Damon replied.
“I have no idea what your name is,” Kimmel said. “And honestly, I don’t care, because it’s time for the ceremonial throwing out of the first Red Sox fan. Please remove this from the theater.”
Damon protested that, for once, he wasn’t trying to sneak onto Kimmel’s show.
“I’m just here with family,” he insisted.
That family, it turned out, was Kimmel’s.
“I’m here with your mom,” Damon said, calling out Kimmel’s mother, Joan. He then revealed that Kimmel’s sister Jill was with them, too.
“My mother and my sister?” Kimmel asked.
“That’s right,” Damon replied.
As Kimmel ordered security to remove him, Damon prepared to leave with both women in tow.
“Listen, I’ll tell you what,” Damon told Kimmel. “You can keep me off the show. You can’t keep me out of your mom.”
He then led Joan and Jill out of the audience while chanting, “Let’s go, Sox!”
“I’m so sorry about that,” Kimmel told the people seated nearby. “Everyone in this section, you should all probably get tested for HPV.”
The cameo made good on Kimmel’s promise that this year’s Brooklyn shows would include “surprise visitors”—and marked Damon’s second consecutive year crashing the show at BAM.
Last October, Damon turned up on the final night of Kimmel’s Brooklyn run disguised as Frankie Focus, the furry green mascot promoting New York’s smartphone ban in schools. Damon was eventually unmasked after insulting Kimmel from the audience.
His latest appearance also comes just three months after Damon smuggled himself onto Jimmy Kimmel Live! inside a wooden Trojan horse, ostensibly to promote Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
The pair’s running faux feud dates back to 2005, when Kimmel began ending episodes with the line, “Apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time.” In the two decades since, it has produced everything from surprise cameos and Oscar-night insults to Sarah Silverman’s famous “I’m F***ing Matt Damon” video.
Damon wasn’t Monday night’s only unannounced visitor.
Later in the monologue, as Kimmel discussed New York City potholes, construction workers suddenly appeared onstage with a jackhammer. When Kimmel demanded to speak with their supervisor, out walked Jon Hamm as “Lenny,” who explained that his crew wasn’t there to repair potholes.
“We don’t fill potholes,” Hamm told him. “We install them.”
Hamm claimed his crew had been making “handcrafted artisanal potholes for 40 years,” before launching into a defense of the less pleasant parts of New York City—including subway urine, rats, impossible parking, and apartments “so small they squeeze out your balls.”
“The New York I love is filthy and dangerous,” Hamm declared, eventually rallying his workers for one last job: “Come on, boys. Let’s teach Mr. Mayor a lesson. Let’s go dig a hole big enough to swallow a school bus. Tonight we ride!”
