Kimmel Guest Host Jelly Roll Pays Tribute to Dolly Parton

Jelly Roll took a break from the jokes during his Jimmy Kimmel Live! monologue Tuesday night to pay tribute to fellow Tennessee native Dolly Parton, who died earlier in the day.

“I do want to mention the big story on everyone’s heart and mind,” Jelly Roll told the audience. “We lost a legend today, the great Dolly Parton.”

The country star, who is guest-hosting Kimmel this week, recalled growing up listening to Parton’s music.

“She was such an inspiration to so many, myself included,” he said. “We’re both from Tennessee, so she meant a lot to my family. We used to sit around the kitchen table and listen to her music together as a family. I’ll never forget it.”

Jelly Roll said Parton’s influence extended well beyond her music.

“I learned so much from Dolly over the years about songwriting, how to handle this crazy business, and how to support your community,” he said, sending his love to East Tennessee and Sevier County, where Parton grew up.

“We love you, Dolly. We miss you,” he continued. “She was infinitely talented, she was relentlessly funny, and adored by all. She might be the last American that everyone liked.”

He closed the tribute with a nod to one of Parton’s most famous songs: “Rest in peace, Dolly. We will always love you.”

Before returning to the comedy, Jelly Roll shared one final piece of Parton wisdom: “If you see someone without a smile today, give ’em yours.”
