Two days ago Donald Trump said he’d have a message for Stephen Colbert “at a later date.” Turns out, that date was barely an hour after Colbert signed off from CBS for good.
Following a Late Show finale that featured a sci-fi subplot and a final guest turn from Paul McCartney, the president took to Truth Social to take one last swing at his longtime late-night nemesis.
“Colbert is finally finished at CBS,” Trump wrote. “Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness he’s finally gone!”
The post arrived after Colbert had gone out of his way not to center Trump in his final broadcast. Colbert’s finale omitted any direct mention of Trump, despite the president’s long-running feud with the host and the political scrutiny surrounding CBS’s decision to end The Late Show.
Instead, Colbert’s final hour leaned into celebration and sentiment. McCartney helped close the show, performing “Hello, Goodbye,” while fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, John Oliver, and Jon Stewart returned to send Colbert off.
Trump’s late-night post served as the answer to a question he had declined to answer earlier in the week. Asked Wednesday afternoon at Joint Base Andrews what message he had for Colbert ahead of the host’s final show, Trump said only, “I’ll have a message at a later date.”
The president had not exactly been keeping his feelings about Colbert a mystery. After CBS announced last summer that it would end The Late Show, Trump celebrated the news, writing that he “absolutely loved” that Colbert had been “fired” and adding, “His talent was even less than his ratings.” In December, after CBS aired its Trump-hosted Kennedy Center Honors special, Trump called Colbert “a pathetic trainwreck” and “a dead man walking.”
Colbert has left the building with his head held up high! Drumpf is a miserable excuse of a being whom the world will party, like it’s 1945, when he finally descends to the Ninth Circle of Hell for eternity!
