Jimmy Fallon reached deep into his Late Night era playbook Wednesday night, reviving “Real People, Fake Arms” for the first time in over a decade—alongside 82 year-old Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
The long-dormant bit—originated with Will Ferrell in its August 2010 debut—has Fallon and a celebrity guest act out a scene from the fictional ’90s Canadian soap opera Jacob’s Patience. The running gag: one of the actors insists on using mannequin arms instead of their own, no matter how absurd the situation, while the other tries (and fails) to carry on as if everything is normal.
Across its original run, the sketch dropped Fallon and his guests into a variety of settings—a sandwich shop, doctor’s office, nail salon, and more—but the conceit remained the same: a soap scene undermined by wildly uncooperative fake hands.
Jagger’s installment places the pair in a jewelry store called “Hackney Diamonds” (the name of the Rolling Stones’ 2023 album) with Jagger greeting Fallon with a nod to Sympathy for the Devil: “Pleased to meet you—hope you guessed my name.”
The revival marked the 15th overall installment of the sketch across Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Fourteen editions aired between August 2010 and October 2015, with a lineup of guests that included Zach Galifianakis, Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell (with Justin Timberlake), Seth Rogen, Miley Cyrus, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, Snoop Dogg, and Sandra Bullock.
The Tonight Show is going all-in on the Rolling Stones over the next week, with all three of the legendary band’s current members making individual appearances alongside Jimmy Fallon in support of their new album, Foreign Tongues. Keith Richards guests Thursday, followed by Ronnie Wood on May 13.
