Aimee Lou Wood fears she’ll be the victim of another rude teething in a first promo for her hosting of this weekend’s Saturday Night Live UK.
It was a little over a year ago when NBC’s SNL served up a pre-taped spoof of The White Lotus, on which Wood in Season 3 played a free spirit from Manchester named Chelsea. “The White POTUS” featured Sarah Sherman as a version of Woods’ character, sporting dental prosthetics that, to put it kindly, made fun of the English actress’ gap-tooth appearance.
Wood called out SNL‘s “mean and unfunny” impression on social media, ultimately fielding apologies from Sherman and other cast members.
“I was excited to play her because she’s so iconic, her character is so iconic, and I f*cking obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings,” Sherman told Vanity Fair. “Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.”
Given all of that draaaama, it makes sense that in the SNL UK promo above, Wood is quite curious to find cast members Celeste Dring, Al Nash and Ayoade Bamgboye standing around at home base, with their hands hiding their mouths from their host.
“Have you guys got fake teeth in…?” asks Wood. Assuming the worst, she throws up her hands, exclaiming, “Oh wow. This is all one big set-up to humiliate me again. I thought SNL UK would be different.”
SNL UK, though, is different, and they mean the Emmy-, Golden Globe- and SAG Award-nominated White Lotus alum no malice but actually wanted to spare her feelings, as the quartet of cast members (Paddy Young included) proceed to reveal.
Press play above to see Nash et al. actually were hiding from this weekend’s host.
SNL UK airs across the pond Saturdays at 10 p.m. GMT, and streams next day Stateside on Peacock.
